AI for Restaurants: Labels and Receipts Read from a Photo, Commands in the Admin
Photograph the label or the fiscal receipt, and the AI fills in the product or the goods reception note. Write what you want to change in the menu, and the AI prepares the changes.
APPY has three AI tools in the Admin. The label import reads the nutrition values, allergens, additives and ingredients from 1–3 photos of the packaging and puts them into the product form, from a phone right in the storeroom or from a computer. The NIR from a fiscal receipt reads the receipt you got when buying the goods and prepares the goods reception into stock. The AI command takes a written request, for example "add a dessert option to the pizza category", and proposes a plan of changes to the menu or the opening hours. In all three, nothing is saved until you check and confirm. Coming soon: POS performance reports, explained by AI.

What does the AI do in the APPY Admin?
In the APPY Admin, the AI does three things: it reads packaging labels and fills in the nutrition values, additives and allergens, it reads purchase fiscal receipts and prepares the goods reception note (NIR), and it turns a written request into a plan of changes to the menu or the opening hours. Each time it proposes, and you check and confirm before anything is saved.
- Nutrition values, additives and allergens from a label photo
- A NIR from a fiscal receipt photo, with the lines matched to stock
- Commands written in plain words, applied after confirmation
- Coming soon: POS performance reports, explained by AI
Nothing is saved without your confirmation, and an applied AI command can be undone for 30 days.
Nutrition values, additives and allergens from labels
You photograph the label on the packaging, and the AI reads the nutrition table, the ingredient list, the allergens and the additives and proposes them in the product form in the Admin. You work right in the storeroom, from your phone, or at the office, uploading several photos of the same package.
On the phone, right in the storeroom
"Import from label" and then "Take a photo" open the phone's rear camera. You photograph the label up close and straight on, next to the shelf, without copying the numbers onto paper.
Several photos of one product, from a computer
You choose up to 3 photos of the same package: the nutrition table, the ingredient list, the side with the allergens. The AI reads them together and proposes a single set of values.
What it reads from the label
Nutrition values per 100 g or 100 ml, the allergens, including "may contain traces of", the additives by E number, the ingredient list and whether the product is frozen.
The calculations, done for you
Per-portion values are converted to 100 g using the portion weight printed on the label, and salt is calculated from sodium when the label gives only sodium.
You check before it is saved
For each value you see what the product has now and what was read, and you tick what you take. Unclear values, allergens that are not in your list and unknown E numbers stay unticked, with the reason written next to them.
It reaches the QR menu
Ingredient values go into the recipe calculation, and from there into the nutrition declaration, allergens and additives on the QR digital menu, as required by ANPC Order 201/2022.
Step by step
- 1Open the ingredient or product in the Admin, on the "Nutrients & Additives" tab.
- 2Tap "Import from label" and take or choose 1–3 photos.
- 3Tick the values you take; anything left unticked does not change.
- 4Press Save.
Works for products, extras and ingredients (raw materials), with the restaurant's own AI key or, without one, through the APPY AI account.
Data from fiscal receipts, straight into the NIR
Goods bought with a fiscal receipt go into stock without you typing the receipt. You photograph the receipt, and the AI reads the supplier, the date and the product lines and prepares the goods reception note (NIR), with each line matched to the ingredient in stock.
One photo of the receipt
When the goods arrive, you photograph the fiscal receipt with your phone or upload it from a computer, without typing it line by line.
What it reads from the receipt
The supplier and the date of the receipt, then, on each line, the product, the quantity, the price and the VAT rate.
Lines matched to your ingredients
Each line is matched to the ingredient in stock. Lines the AI cannot match with confidence stay unassigned, and you pick the ingredient from the list.
You check the NIR before stock
You see the whole NIR and can correct any quantity or price. The goods go into stock only after you save, as with any NIR made by hand.
Step by step
- 1Photograph or upload the fiscal receipt.
- 2The AI prepares the NIR with the lines it read.
- 3Check the matches with your ingredients and correct what is needed.
- 4Save, and the goods go into stock.
The NIR is saved only after you check it. Lines the AI did not read with confidence are left for you to fill in.
AI commands for the Admin
You write in plain words what you want to change in the menu or the opening hours, and the AI prepares a plan of changes. You see every change before you apply it, and you can undo the command for 30 days.
Write the request, not hunt for the screen
The "AI command" button in the Admin header, next to "Publish", opens the window where you write, for example, "add a dessert option to the pizza category" or "delivery Monday to Friday 11-23".
What it can change
New or renamed categories, new products and extras without photos, names, descriptions, prices, preparation times, products hidden or moved between categories, extras sets and location opening hours.
What it does not touch
It deletes nothing and does not touch payments, VAT, fiscal settings, users, delivery portals, photos or publishing.
The plan, with Now and After
Every change appears with its current value and the new one. If the AI needs a detail, for example a price, it asks. Nothing changes until you press "Apply the changes".
30-day undo and history
An applied command is undone from the window or from History, which keeps the last 30 commands. Whatever changed in the meantime, for example a new product that has already sold, stays, and the plan tells you why.
On the restaurant's own AI key
The command runs on the restaurant's OpenAI, Claude or Gemini key, added in the Admin under Webhooks. You pay the provider directly: usually a few euro cents per command.
Step by step
- 1Press "AI command" and write what you want to change.
- 2Press "Propose the plan" and read each change.
- 3Press "Apply the changes": they show at once in the Admin and the POS.
- 4Publish the app so they reach the customers' app and the web too.
The plan for a command on a large menu can take a minute or two; you can close the window, and the plan shows up in History.
POS performance reports, explained by AI
Coming soonWe are working on reports in which the AI explains in words how the restaurant did: what sold, where things went up or down and what is worth watching. The figures come from the POS reports, and the AI only explains them.
The day, summed up in words
Sales, top products and peak hours, in short, instead of tables.
What changed, and why
The comparison with the previous period, by location, sales channel and product, with what drove the difference.
The figures stay the reports' own
The AI does not calculate or change the figures: it takes them from the APPY reports and explains them.
This is in the works. Write to us if you want to test it among the first.
Challenges
- The nutrition values, allergens and additives on every package are typed in by hand, ingredient by ingredient, and one wrong digit ends up on the QR menu.
- The values have to come from the labels of the products you use, but the packages are in the storeroom and the computer is in the office.
- A simple change, like dessert as an option on every pizza, means opening dozens of products one by one.
- Descriptions, prices and opening hours are changed from different screens, and a mistake is noticed only after it has reached customers.
- Goods bought with a fiscal receipt are typed into the NIR by hand, line by line, or never entered at all, and book stock stops matching real stock.
With APPY
- You photograph the label, and the nutrition values, allergens, additives and ingredients appear in the product form, ready to check.
- You work right in the storeroom, from your phone: open the ingredient, tap "Take a photo" and save.
- You write what you want, for example "add a dessert option to the pizza category", and the AI prepares the change for every product in the category.
- You see every change before it is applied, and you can undo an applied command for 30 days.
- You photograph the fiscal receipt from the purchase, and the AI prepares the NIR with each line matched to the ingredient in stock.
